Fiserv, the global payments and financial technology company, has launched a digital-asset platform for financial institutions, with North Dakota’s dollar-pegged stablecoin Roughrider Coin as its first use case.

Fiserv said on October 1 that Roughrider Coin was designed to support interbank fund transfers for the Bank of North Dakota. VersaBank will issue the stablecoin, while Fireblocks will provide digital-asset infrastructure and tokenization services. Transactions will be processed on the Solana blockchain.

The Bank of North Dakota plans to use Fiserv’s issuance, reserve, custody and settlement infrastructure to deploy Roughrider Coin across the state’s financial network. More than 90 banks and credit unions will be able to use the stablecoin through Commercial Center, Fiserv’s online banking system for businesses.

VersaBank will oversee issuance and custody of Roughrider Coin, along with minting, burning and reserve-asset management. Through the arrangement, Fiserv aims to integrate stablecoins into existing interbank payment systems while maintaining an operating structure aligned with the regulatory environment.

Fiserv plans to expand the platform’s applications to include stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable payments, automated corporate treasury management, tokenized deposits and global currency account services.

Sunil Sachdev, Fiserv’s head of embedded finance and digital assets, said the launch was significant because it moved beyond the proof-of-concept stage and commercialized stablecoin-based banking and payment services in a live financial-institution environment.
