Summary

  • Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Glamsterdam, has been activated on the Sepolia testnet, marking one of the final major checkpoints before a mainnet rollout.
  • The upgrade is designed to improve Ethereum mainnet efficiency and scalability by separating block proposal from block construction and adding a feature that makes parallel execution easier, with the goal of increasing network throughput.
  • The Ethereum Foundation is also pursuing a plan to set the lower bound for the gas limit at 200 million under the Glamsterdam upgrade, with activation on the Hoodi testnet and mainnet still ahead, followed by full-scale development of the next upgrade, Hegotá.

Ethereum’s next major upgrade, known as “Glamsterdam,” has been activated on the Sepolia testnet, marking one of the final major checkpoints before its planned rollout on mainnet.

Cointelegraph, a cryptocurrency-focused media outlet, reported on October 6 that the Glamsterdam upgrade went live on the Sepolia testnet at 1:53 p.m. UTC.

The upgrade is focused on improving Ethereum mainnet efficiency and scalability. Key changes include separating the role of proposing blocks from the role of building them, and adding a feature that pre-arranges information on accounts and storage accessed during block processing to make parallel execution easier.

The aim is to give validators more time to verify transaction results while allowing multiple transactions to be processed at the same time, increasing network throughput.

The Ethereum Foundation is also pursuing a plan to set the lower bound for the gas limit at 200 million as part of the Glamsterdam upgrade. That would mark a sharp increase from the current level of about 60 million and could boost the network’s processing capacity after the upgrade.

After the Sepolia test, developers plan to determine the activation schedule for the Hoodi testnet and then finalize the timing of the mainnet rollout.

Glamsterdam is a major upgrade following Fusaka, which was deployed last year. After it goes live on mainnet, development of the next upgrade, known as “Hegotá,” is set to begin in earnest.
