Crypto market analyst Jamie Coutts said the top tier of the digital-asset market has effectively gone nowhere over the past five years, adding that slower supply growth and a recovery in demand could reshape the market’s next phase.

In a post on X on Oct. 7, Coutts wrote that the top 200 crypto assets by market capitalization weighting have risen just 5% since October 2021. Over the past five years, the crypto market has “effectively gone nowhere,” he wrote.

Coutts said new supply had outpaced demand over that period. But annual growth in new supply has slowed to 3.3% from 26.5%, while the amount returned to crypto holders has increased fivefold, he said, adding that demand is also approaching an inflection point.

He said the market is currently trading about 35% below its long-term trend line, describing the current period as a “payback” era for crypto. As supply growth slows, returns to holders increase and demand recovers, more value could flow to existing investors.
