U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized Western countries for opening their borders, moving industry overseas and allowing military strength to weaken, while calling for a restoration of national sovereignty and national power.
Fox News reported on October 7 that Rubio, speaking in Athens, Greece, said, "We opened our borders, moved our industries overseas, and allowed our military capabilities to decline."
He argued that the West had lost pride in its own history and identity as nationalism came to be treated as a negative concept. He also said national sovereignty had weakened as key decision-making authority was handed to international bureaucratic bodies that are difficult to control.
Rubio said the U.S. is working to strengthen its defense capabilities, rebuild industry and secure critical supply chains, and urged Europe to move in the same direction. He also stressed that cooperation between the U.S. and Europe should continue even as national sovereignty is reinforced.
