U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said nations need to restore an approach to statecraft backed not only by prudence and diplomacy, but also by the capability to use force if diplomacy fails. Credibility, he added, also depends on a demonstrated willingness to actually use force.
In a speech in Athens on October 7, Rubio said that is the model of statecraft the Trump administration is seeking to restore. He also said the U.S. is working to regain control of critical supply chains, reindustrialize and rebuild its defense capabilities.
Rubio said he believes Europe can “wake from its long sleep.” He cited rising defense spending, new defense cooperation, and expanded manufacturing and production in Europe as signs of change.
