Former Pentagon Chief Austin Says No Easy Exit From US-Iran War as Diplomatic Breakthrough Slips Away
Summary
- Former US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a diplomatic breakthrough to end a US-Iran war.
- Austin said the Gulf region is unlikely to return to its prewar state because of infrastructure damage from the war and threats surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
- Austin said a Russian diesel deal pushed by President Donald Trump would not be enough to significantly reduce fuel prices and could end up helping Russia sustain its war in Ukraine.

Former US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that finding a diplomatic breakthrough to end a US-Iran war is becoming increasingly difficult.
Walter Bloomberg reported on October 12 that Austin said both Washington and Tehran believe they can outlast the other. "There is no easy exit."
He cited infrastructure damage from the war, threats surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and expanding military cooperation among countries hostile to the US. As a result, the Gulf region is unlikely to return to its prewar state.
Austin also said a Russian diesel deal pushed by President Donald Trump would fall short of meaningfully lowering fuel prices. Instead, he said, it could help Russia sustain its war in Ukraine.
