US Vice President JD Vance claimed Microsoft replaced 6,000 laid-off American workers with foreign hires. Visa approval data, however, shows most of the approvals were for existing employees.

Cointelegraph reported on October 12 that Vance criticized Microsoft's job cuts and foreign hiring, arguing that foreign workers filled positions vacated by 6,000 laid-off Americans.

But H-1B visa approval data for foreign skilled workers shows that about two-thirds of Microsoft's approvals were for existing employees.

H-1B approvals cover more than new hires. They also include extensions of stay for current workers. That makes it difficult to interpret the total number of approvals as a measure of replacement hiring for Americans who were laid off.
