Summary

  • Starknet (STRK) said it has started a community vote on whether to transition to a layer-1 blockchain.
  • It said the vote is a step to gauge support for further research rather than a formal approval process for a layer-1 transition.
  • It said that if it moves to layer 1, it would be able to pursue quantum-resistance updates on its own without relying on Ethereum's upgrade schedule.

Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, has begun a community vote on whether to pursue a transition to a layer-1 blockchain.

Cointelegraph reported on October 15 that Starknet launched a seven-day vote for token holders to gauge support for a possible shift to layer 1. Voters can choose from three options: support further research, oppose the move, or withhold judgment until more information is available. The results will be disclosed after voting closes on October 22.

StarkWare, Starknet's developer, said the vote is not a formal approval process for a layer-1 transition. Rather, it is intended to determine whether the community supports additional research. Any actual transition would require a separate proposal and governance vote.

StarkWare said a move to layer 1 would allow it to pursue its own quantum-resistance upgrades without depending on Ethereum's upgrade schedule. Eli Ben-Sasson, StarkWare's chief executive officer, said securing quantum safety for cryptocurrencies is an urgent task. He added that Bitcoin and Ethereum have been relatively slow to respond.
