Bearish bets are gaining traction in the Bitcoin derivatives market. Stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation pressures are weighing on sentiment as investors brace for the possibility of additional interest-rate hikes.

On Oct. 15, Darkfost, a CryptoQuant contributor, wrote on X that Binance's Bitcoin perpetual futures funding rate had fallen to -0.0073%. He said sentiment across the broader derivatives market was showing a clear bearish tilt.

Funding rates are fees exchanged between traders to keep futures prices aligned with spot prices. When the rate is negative, traders betting on a decline pay those betting on a rise. That points to strong demand to maintain short positions despite the cost, making it a closely watched gauge of bearish sentiment.

Darkfost cited U.S. inflation data as the backdrop for the latest pessimism. Consumer price index and producer price index readings both came in above expectations, fueling concern that the Federal Reserve could raise rates further. Bitcoin's recent move above $87,000, followed by a sharp pullback, also added to investor caution.

Still, stronger bearish positioning does not necessarily mean prices will keep falling. Historically, such phases have often emerged ahead of a trend reversal. Once bearish expectations become crowded, a rebound can follow.

He said investors should distinguish between a rebound that can last and one that fades quickly. He identified $80,000 and $74,000 as key support levels. Rather than relying on funding rates alone to determine trading direction, he added, investors should also watch how the market behaves around those price levels.
