Rumors of a liquidation at AI-focused hedge fund VARA are renewing attention on the risks of leveraged bets concentrated in AI-related stocks. While there has been no confirmation that the fund is actually being wound down, simultaneous declines in its key holdings and a broader pullback by hedge funds have heightened fears of forced selling.

On October 15, rumors circulated across US social media and investor forums that Value Aligned Research Advisors, or VARA, was unloading holdings after failing to absorb mounting losses. Still, no credible reports have emerged to support the claim, and no concrete details have surfaced on the scale of any potential liquidation.

VARA is an AI-focused hedge fund founded last year by former BlackRock executive Ben Hoskin and former Hudson River Trading executive David Field. As of the end of June, it held about $40.1 billion in positions across 123 common stocks and options. Its largest common-stock holdings included Bloom Energy and Nebius at about $1.7 billion each, and CoreWeave at about $1.1 billion. AI hardware companies including Micron, SanDisk and Seagate were also among its major investments.

Those stocks have all come under pressure recently, raising concerns that losses at one fund could trigger additional selling. In leveraged trades, falling share prices reduce collateral values and can force investors to post additional margin. Selling assets to meet those calls can transmit losses and selling pressure to other investors holding the same names. VARA also recorded a 44% loss in July alone.

Separate from the rumors surrounding any single fund, a broader reduction in AI exposure across hedge funds is already evident. Goldman Sachs' hedge fund trading desk said net selling in a global AI stock basket between October 8 and October 14 was the second largest in the past year. It also wiped out all cumulative net buying built up since early last year. Trading was dominated by the unwinding of existing long positions rather than new short selling, while money rotated into defensive sectors such as healthcare and consumer staples.

Financing conditions are also pressuring sentiment. Rich Privorotsky, a Goldman Sachs executive, said high capital costs could prevent demand from translating into actual capital investment. In the worst-case scenario, the semiconductor supply chain could face an "order gap" in 2027 and 2028. Even if AI demand remains intact, higher borrowing costs could delay data-center construction and equipment orders.

At the same time, some market participants argue it is too early to conclude that demand across the AI industry is breaking down. Barclays said recent weakness was driven largely by position adjustments, citing demand outlooks from ASML Holding NV and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Amazon Web Services Chief Financial Officer said AWS recoups its investment in AI servers in less than three years, adding that AI demand is real and AI spending is sustainable.

The next round of earnings reports will put the focus on whether major cloud companies are converting heavier investment into profits and cash flow. Scott Rubner of Citadel Securities said he remains constructive on US stocks in the fourth quarter, but added that the coming weeks will test the market's fundamentals.
