ENS Opens Vote to Activate ENSv2 on Ethereum Mainnet

Ethereum Name Service, or ENS, is holding an on-chain governance vote to activate its next-generation ENSv2 on the Ethereum mainnet.

Snapshot, the governance platform, said on X on Oct. 19 that ENS had put an ENSv2 activation proposal to a vote, consisting of 15 execution items.

If approved, all 15 measures will be carried out at once through an execution contract managed by the DAO. New domain registrations on ENS v1 will stop, but previously registered names will remain usable and can still be renewed.

Under ENSv2, domain owners will be able to set subname registration systems more freely. Permissions will also be split more granularly, allowing owners to change the address a name points to without transferring authority over ownership transfers.

ENS Labs will then synchronize the relevant domain data, activate new ENSv2 registrations and migration, and hand over the remaining administrative authority to the ENS DAO.

Migrating existing ENS names to ENSv2 will be optional, with no separate deadline. Once a name is migrated, however, the move cannot be reversed. New registrations will be paused temporarily for several hours during the transition.

So far, six wallets have cast votes representing a total of 531,252 ENS, with support rounding to nearly 100%. Quorum, however, has not yet been met. The vote is scheduled to end at 5:32 a.m. UTC on Oct. 25.
