Andreessen Horowitz, the global venture capital firm known as a16z, said on October 23 that it is expanding its investment focus beyond crypto startups to a broader category it calls "frontier startups" — companies developing new technologies and creating new markets over the long term. As part of the move, it is renaming a16z Crypto as a16z Frontier.
The firm said the broader investment scope reflects its long-term strategy of identifying the growth potential of emerging technologies. In the past, a16z backed Oculus, drone company Skydio and Zipline after spotting new market opportunities created by the spread of smartphones and related technological shifts. It later applied the same approach in crypto, investing in early ecosystem players including Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap.
a16z said it is focused on the current technology transition centered on AI. In particular, it sees a major investment opportunity in "native use cases" that go beyond using AI to improve the efficiency of existing work and instead enable activities and experiences that were previously impossible. While such efforts may begin as experiments, the firm said they could eventually develop into mass-market products. It plans to identify opportunities based on technological progress and long-term growth potential.
The firm also said advances in AI are lowering barriers to software and hardware development, which it believes will lead to new products and services in autonomous machines as well as biotech and healthcare. It also expects innovative business models to emerge in areas such as full-stack startups combining software, hardware and services, and new networks connecting people and AI agents.
a16z said it will continue its crypto investment and policy work. It also said blockchain is expected to play an important role in future AI-based networks by enabling machine-to-machine transactions and new economic functions.
a16z Frontier will be led by Chris Dixon along with a16z co-founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, as well as general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The firm said its operating teams will continue to provide comprehensive support for both existing and new portfolio companies in areas including regulatory response, market entry, hiring, marketing and technology research and development.
a16z said its Seoul office, led by Park Sung-mo, head of Asia-Pacific go-to-market, will continue supporting global portfolio companies entering the Korean market. In line with the expanded investment scope, it also plans to broaden cooperation with Korean companies and startups in next-generation technologies such as AI and robotics.
"Korea continues to produce competitive companies in frontier technologies such as AI, robotics and semiconductors," Park said. "With a16z Frontier's expanded investment scope, we will strengthen engagement with Korean startups and help portfolio companies discover new business opportunities in the Korean market."
"Technology innovation centered on AI is accelerating, and new products and markets are emerging beyond the boundaries of existing industries," Dixon said. "In the past, companies that came to define an era were often born in unexpected fields, and ideas that may seem unfamiliar or unlikely today can become essential products in the future."
He added that a16z Frontier will continue working with founders building new technologies and markets, helping them turn innovative ideas into reality and create new growth opportunities.
