Ethereum Name Service has launched ENSv2, its next-generation naming protocol, on the Ethereum mainnet.
ENS said in an official blog post on October 27 that ENSv2 had gone live on mainnet. The key change is a redesigned architecture that allows individuals, communities and companies to manage on-chain names with greater precision.
ENS also overhauled the ENS app and ENS Explorer. The ENS app simplifies name registration and renewal, profile settings and notifications. ENS Explorer allows users to check a name's change history, controller, connection method and settings.
The protocol architecture has also been revised. ENSv2 introduces a hierarchical registry and more granular permission controls. That means a single name can function like its own on-chain naming system, while management rights for specific subdomains can be assigned separately.
Existing ENS names will continue to work without requiring re-registration. Users who want access to the new features can upgrade their existing .eth names to ENSv2 through the ENS app.
ENS said it currently supports more than 36 million names across .eth and various ecosystem namespaces. More than 600 applications also support ENS name resolution, it added.
ENS said ENSv2 could eventually be used to identify a wide range of on-chain entities, including tokenized assets, companies, organizations and AI agents. As an example, a tokenized asset issuer could link contract addresses across multiple networks and related documents under a single namespace.
To mark the mainnet launch, ENS also unveiled an ENSv2 commemorative NFT collection. Eligible users can receive one NFT per wallet after upgrading a name to ENSv2.
