The U.S. government has been revealed to have sold a stake in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic tied to executives of the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX for about $630 million.
BeInCrypto reported on October 28 that Anthropic said in a recently filed S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it repurchased 4,453,900 Series B preferred shares from the U.S. government in October 2025.
The repurchase price was about $140.97 a share. Anthropic then resold the shares to nine investment firms at the same price, adding that the transaction generated no net proceeds for the company.
The filing did not identify the existing shareholder by name. However, the stake is said to match shares acquired through a $50 million investment made in 2022 by former Alameda Research Chief Executive Officer Caroline Ellison and former FTX executive Nishad Singh. The shares were later vested in the U.S. government through a U.S. court forfeiture process.
BeInCrypto also reported that the U.S. Department of Justice transferred the proceeds from the Anthropic stake sale to the FTX bankruptcy estate at the end of 2025. It said the funds belong to the FTX bankruptcy estate and will be used for victim compensation.
In connection with the matter, the Justice Department said returning forfeited funds to victims through its asset forfeiture program is one of its top priorities.
The stake is separate from Anthropic shares sold by the FTX bankruptcy estate for about $1.3 billion in 2024.
