Forecast Trend Report by Period
U.S. Democrats won the midterm elections but did not secure enough seats to override President Donald Trump’s veto, Walter Bloomberg reported. That leaves open the possibility that Democratic legislation could be blocked by the president.
To override a presidential veto, both the Senate and the House must each approve the bill again with support from at least two-thirds of members, according to Walter Bloomberg on November 4. Democrats won the midterms but did not reach that threshold in either chamber.
A U.S. president can veto a bill within 10 days, excluding Sundays, after receiving legislation passed by Congress. If Congress adjourns during that period and the bill cannot be returned, the president can also kill it by refusing to sign it through a pocket veto.
Trump also signaled he could use his veto power by posting on his social media platform Truth Social a photo of a red hat bearing the word “VETO.”
Even so, Democrats can still check the Trump administration through Congress’s oversight powers over the executive branch, investigations and the legislative process.
