President Donald Trump said any move by Democrats to begin impeachment proceedings against him would backfire on the party.
The Times and other outlets reported on November 4 that Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the White House construction site for a new banquet hall. "If they try to impeach, it would ruin the Democrats," he said, suggesting he sees any impeachment push as a political liability for the party.
Trump also said he is not considering dismissing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. With Democrats targeting Hegseth among Trump administration officials, the comment underscored that he does not plan to remove him.
CBS News, however, reported the same day that Trump has been discussing with aides whether to replace Hegseth after the midterm elections.
