Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 14th that the party's stance of 'rejecting' the second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol is unlikely to change.
Kwon met with reporters during the party's general assembly of lawmakers, held ahead of the vote on President Yoon's impeachment motion, and said, "As of now, I don't think there's a high possibility of the party's stance changing." He added, "Once it's confirmed, we will announce it then."
Previously, the People Power Party had decided on a stance of not participating in the vote ahead of the first impeachment motion on the 7th. To change the party's stance in the general assembly, more than two-thirds (72 members) of the party's lawmakers must agree. Lawmakers are currently engaged in intense discussions regarding the direction of the vote.
At 4 PM today, the National Assembly will vote on President Yoon's impeachment motion. So far, seven lawmakers from the People Power Party, including Kim Sang-wook, Kim Ye-ji, Kim Jae-seop, Ahn Cheol-soo, Jin Jong-oh, and Han Ji-ah, have publicly declared their intention to vote in favor of the impeachment. The requirement for passage is the support of more than two-thirds of the total members of the National Assembly (200 out of 300 members). With 192 members from the opposition, if just one more member from the People Power Party declares support for the impeachment, the motion is likely to pass.
