Summary

  • The U.S. initial jobless claims were reported at 201,000, falling below Wall Street's expectations.
  • Continuing jobless claims also slightly fell below expectations at 1,867,000.
  • This is an important indicator showing the resilience of the U.S. labor market.

Last week's U.S. initial jobless claims fell below Wall Street's market expectations.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's report on the 8th (local time), the number of initial jobless claims in the U.S. was 201,000, below the expected 214,000 and last week's revised figure of 211,000.

The number of continuing jobless claims, which refers to those who have claimed unemployment benefits for two consecutive weeks, was also slightly below the expected 1,870,000 at 1,867,000.

The jobless claims indicator is a measure of the U.S. labor market situation, and a decrease in jobless claims indicates a reduction in the number of unemployed, suggesting that the labor and employment market is operating resiliently.
