Indication of Tariff Imposition Based on Influx of Chinese Fentanyl

President Donald Trump of the United States hinted at the possibility of imposing tariffs on China, citing the influx of Chinese fentanyl into the country.

On the 21st (local time), President Trump stated at a White House press conference, "We are discussing imposing a 10% tariff based on the fact that China is sending fentanyl (zombie drug) to Mexico and Canada." Regarding the timing of the tariff imposition on China, he mentioned, "Probably February 1."

When asked about what he discussed with President Xi Jinping during their recent call regarding tariffs, he replied, "We didn't talk much about tariffs."

Meanwhile, when asked whether he is considering imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico to expedite negotiations on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) scheduled for 2026, President Trump denied it, saying, "Tariffs are not about our issue," while pointing out that "Mexico and Canada are allowing illegal immigration and the influx of fentanyl into the United States."
