◆ NY Stock Market Rises as Tariff Uncertainty Clears

The three major New York stock indices closed higher. This is interpreted as uncertainty being removed after President Donald Trump announced his reciprocal tariff plans. As of the 13th Eastern Time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 44,711.43, up 342.87 points (0.77%) from the previous session at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index finished at 6,115.07, up 63.10 points (1.04%), while the Nasdaq Composite rose 295.69 points (1.50%) to close at 19,945.64. January US PPI exceeded expectations with a sharp increase. According to the US Department of Labor, January PPI rose 0.4% month-over-month, surpassing the expected 0.3%. Year-over-year, it increased by 3.5%, ahead of the expected 3.2%. However, the market seemed somewhat relieved that this was a slowdown compared to December's revised 0.5% monthly increase. The December figure was substantially revised up to 0.5% from the initial 0.2% increase. Additionally, market sentiment improved after Trump revealed plans to impose customized reciprocal tariffs by country, though he did not specify the scale or timing of these tariffs. Stock indices extended gains on expectations that tariff implementation would take time and leave room for negotiations.
