  • It was reported that the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the US was tallied at 221,000, lower than market expectations.
  • Continuing unemployment claims totaled 1,897,000, exceeding both the previous week and market forecasts.
  • The number of unemployment claims is an indicator that gauges the overheating of the US labor market, which investors need to monitor closely.

Last week's new unemployment benefit claims in the US were below market expectations.

The US Department of Labor announced on the 6th (local time) that new unemployment benefit claims last week totaled 221,000. This is 13,000 lower than market expectations (234,000). Compared to the revised figure from the previous week (242,000), it's 21,000 fewer.

Continuing unemployment claims, representing those who have claimed unemployment benefits for two consecutive weeks, totaled 1,897,000. This exceeds the revised figure from the previous week (1,855,000) and market forecast (1,880,000) by 42,000 and 17,000 respectively. This suggests that unemployed individuals are finding it more difficult to secure new jobs.

New unemployment benefit claims serve as an indicator to gauge the overheating of the US labor market. An increase in unemployment claims can be interpreted as a sign that the overheated labor market is cooling down. Experts are closely monitoring employment indicators such as unemployment claims to assess the impact of President Donald Trump's federal government restructuring and the effect of tariff increases on corporate decision-making.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Commerce reported that the US trade deficit for January this year recorded a deficit of $131.4 billion.
