Summary
- The 'Stargate' project announced plans to install 64,000 of Nvidia's latest AI chips, GB200, in data centers by 2026.
- This investment will put billions of dollars worth of AI chips into the first data center alone, which is reported to be an unusually large scale for a single data center.
- The supply shortage for Nvidia's high-performance chips is expected to continue for the time being.
Investing Billions of Dollars Just in AI Chip Purchases
Shortage Expected to Continue for the Time Being

It has been reported that Donald Trump's artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure expansion project 'Stargate' will equip its first data center with Nvidia AI chips worth billions of dollars. It is expected that billions of dollars will be invested just in purchasing Nvidia AI chips.
On the 6th (local time), Bloomberg News, citing internal sources, reported that OpenAI and Oracle plan to install 64,000 of Nvidia's GB200 semiconductors in their first data center by 2026. The GB200 is an AI accelerator that contains two of Nvidia's latest AI chips, 'Blackwell' graphics processing units (GPUs), and one Grace central processing unit (CPU). While Nvidia has not revealed the official price of the GB200, the previous model sold for $30,000-40,000 per unit. This means that AI chips worth billions of dollars will be installed in this data center alone.
OpenAI and Oracle are reported to have planned to implement 16,000 GB200s, a quarter of the total, by this summer. Installing AI accelerators of this scale in a single data center is highly unusual. Previously, the two companies announced the Stargate project together with Japan's SoftBank, stating they would invest up to $500 billion (approximately 700 trillion won) over four years. Accordingly, in addition to the first data center under construction in Abilene, Texas, they are also considering sites in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Oregon.
The shortage of Nvidia's high-performance chips is expected to continue for the time being. xAI, an AI company led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has recently been significantly expanding its AI servers in Memphis, USA.
