U.S. President Donald Trump warned that "if the European Union (EU) and Canada cooperate, larger tariffs will be imposed."
According to foreign media such as Reuters on the 27th, President Trump announced through his social media platform Truth Social, which he established, that "if the EU and Canada cooperate to cause 'economic harm' to the United States, much larger tariffs than currently planned will be imposed." President Trump stated, "This is a measure to protect the United States, which has been the best friend of these two countries in history."
Previously, on the 26th (local time), President Trump officially announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on foreign cars imported into the United States starting from the 3rd of next month, following steel and aluminum. The target is all foreign cars. However, cars produced in Korea, Japan, Europe, Mexico, and Canada are expected to be the main targets of the tariffs. President Trump said at a press conference held at the White House that day, "We expect an annual tax revenue increase of $100 billion (about 147 trillion won) from the imposition of tariffs on foreign cars."
The EU and Canada immediately protested. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated through a statement, "The U.S. decision to impose tariffs on European car exports is deeply regrettable," and "The EU will continue to seek a negotiated solution while protecting economic interests." Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said, "This is a direct attack on Canadian workers," and "We are considering retaliatory measures against the United States."
