The Constitutional Court's ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol will be delivered on the 4th.
The Constitutional Court announced on the 1st that "the ruling on the impeachment case of President Yoon Suk-yeol is scheduled to be delivered at 11 AM on April 4th in the main courtroom."
It has been 111 days since the impeachment motion against President Yoon passed the National Assembly on December 14th last year, and 35 days since the final arguments on February 25th.
If the Constitutional Court upholds the impeachment, President Yoon will be removed from office, and if it is dismissed or rejected, he will immediately return to his duties. A decision to remove requires the agreement of at least 6 out of the 8 current justices.
The Constitutional Court has decided to allow live broadcasting and public attendance for this ruling date. The court also allowed live broadcasting during the impeachment ruling of former President Park Geun-hye.
Previously, the National Assembly impeached President Yoon on the grounds that he violated the constitution and laws by declaring martial law on December 3rd last year and deploying the military to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission.
President Yoon has countered that the declaration of martial law was a 'warning' to alert the public to the opposition's parliamentary violence. He also maintains that he adhered to the law during the declaration, maintenance, and lifting of martial law and did not order 'politician arrests' or 'removal of lawmakers.'
