The 'Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Prohibition Act' proposed in the United States has passed the House.
According to The Block on the 3rd, the 'Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act' passed the US House Financial Services Committee vote on the 2nd (local time) with 27 votes in favor and 22 against. The core of the bill is to prevent the US government from using CBDC as part of its monetary policy. The bill also includes a provision prohibiting the Federal Reserve (Fed) from offering CBDC-related products and services.
The reason such a bill was proposed in the US is due to concerns that CBDC could strengthen government financial surveillance. Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, also stated in February that "CBDC will not be issued during my term." Scott Besant, US Secretary of the Treasury, also stated that there is "no reason" to hold or utilize CBDC.
