Summary

  • It was announced that the new unemployment claims in the U.S. were counted at 219,000, lower than market expectations.
  • The continuing unemployment claims were reported at 1,903,000, an increase from the previous week and above expectations.
  • These figures were emphasized as indicators to assess the overheated situation of the U.S. labor market.

Last week, the number of new unemployment claims in the United States fell below market expectations.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 3rd (local time) that the number of new unemployment claims last week was counted at 219,000. This is 6,000 less than the expert forecast of 225,000. It is also 6,000 less compared to the revised figure of the previous week (225,000).

The number of continuing unemployment claims, which refers to those who have claimed unemployment benefits for two consecutive weeks, was counted at 1,903,000. This exceeds the revised figure of the previous week (1,847,000) and the market expectation (1,860,000) by 56,000 and 43,000, respectively.

The number of new unemployment claims is an indicator that can gauge the overheated situation of the U.S. labor market. An increase in unemployment claims can be interpreted as a sign that the overheated labor market is cooling down.

Experts are keeping an eye on employment indicators such as unemployment claims to understand the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's federal government restructuring and tariff increases on corporate decision-making.
