Trump: "Trade deficit with China will continue"

"Neither China nor the EU will exploit the US"

U.S. President Donald Trump said "sometimes you have to take medicine" in response to the stock market plunge following the announcement of tariff policies.

According to News1, President Trump said this on Air Force One (the presidential aircraft) on the 6th (local time) when asked if there was a level of decline he could tolerate, "I think it's a silly question, but I don't want anything to fall," he said.

He continued to speak in a way that emphasized the need for tariffs to resolve trade deficits with major trading partners such as China and the European Union, rather than directly mentioning the stock market.

When asked if he was intentionally inducing a sell-off in stocks, Trump said, "I want to solve the deficit problem we are experiencing with China, the EU, and other countries," adding, "If they want to talk about that issue, I'm willing to have a conversation, but if not, why would I want to talk?"

Trump particularly stated that he would not make any agreements related to tariffs unless the trade deficit with China is resolved.

He said, "The trade deficit with China is large and will continue, leading to the worst situation," adding, "And as you know, I was elected president because of this issue, and we have already imposed tariffs and will continue to do so."

When asked if any agreements on mutual tariffs had been reached with world leaders, he said, "I've had many conversations with leaders around the world, including Europe and Asia," adding, "They are eager to make deals." When asked specifically if there was an agreement to lower tariffs, he avoided a direct answer by saying, "You need to know that what we are dealing with is a huge deficit."

He emphasized, "Neither China nor the EU will exploit the US," adding, "Keep in mind that the EU was trying to screw the US."
