Trump "90-day reciprocal tariff waiver for non-retaliatory countries... Tariffs on China increased to 125%"

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day waiver on reciprocal tariffs for countries that do not retaliate against U.S. tariffs. He also imposed additional tariffs on China.

On the 9th (local time), Trump stated on Truth Social, "Countries that have expressed a willingness to negotiate despite the imposition of U.S. reciprocal tariffs have not taken any retaliatory actions against the U.S." He added, "Accordingly, I have approved a 90-day tariff waiver for these countries." He further stated, "During this period, I will significantly reduce the reciprocal tariff rate to 10%," adding that "both of these measures take effect immediately."

Additional tariffs were imposed on China. Trump said, "Based on China's (aggressive) actions, I am immediately increasing the tariffs imposed on China to 125%," stating that "China must clearly realize that exploiting the U.S. and other countries can no longer be tolerated."

Statements from officials regarding the decision followed. According to Walter Bloomberg, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said, "The tariff waiver is not due to market decline," and "Countries that did not retaliate will be rewarded." A White House spokesperson stated, "Tariffs were increased because China decided to retaliate recklessly."

Meanwhile, earlier, President Trump stated on Truth Social, "Stay calm. Now is the perfect time to buy (assets)."
