Summary

  • It was reported that attention should be paid to the total 145% tariff imposed by President Trump on China.
  • The White House emphasized that the reciprocal tariffs on China were raised from the existing 84% to 125%.
  • It was reported that China implemented retaliatory tariffs at the same level in response to the U.S. tariff measures.

After President Donald Trump took office, the tariff rate imposed by the United States on China is a total of 145%, CNBC and others reported on the 10th (local time), citing a White House official.

On this day, a White House official reaffirmed that the tariffs imposed on China since President Trump's inauguration total 145%. It is said that the 125% reciprocal tariff announced on the 9th should be added to the total 20% tariff imposed twice at 10% each in February due to the fentanyl issue.

On the 9th, President Trump announced on the social networking service (SNS) Truth Social that he would immediately defer the reciprocal tariffs that had taken effect on more than 60 countries around the world for 90 days, writing, "Based on China's disrespectful attitude towards the global market, I am immediately raising the tariffs imposed by the United States on China to 125%." Subsequently, the executive order released by the White House on this day stated that the reciprocal tariffs on China would be raised to 125%, not 84%.

China announced a 34% tariff on U.S. imports in response to the initially announced 34% reciprocal tariff by the United States, and when the U.S. implemented an additional 50% reciprocal tariff to make it 84%, China announced a retaliatory tariff of 84% again. In response, the U.S. raised the reciprocal tariff to 125%.

Although the total tariffs imposed on China since President Trump's inauguration are at the level of 145%, it seems that China will have to pay a total tariff of over 165% when combined with the existing tariffs on China.

According to the executive order, the reciprocal tariffs on China will be imposed from 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on the 10th, and the deferral of reciprocal tariffs on other countries will be valid for 90 days from the same time.
