Last week's U.S. initial jobless claims fell below market expectations.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 17th (local time) that last week's initial jobless claims were tallied at 215,000. This figure is 10,000 below the expert forecast of 225,000. Compared to the previous week's revised figure of 224,000, it is 9,000 less.
The number of continued jobless claims, which have been filed for two consecutive weeks, was tallied at 1,885,000. This figure exceeds the previous week's revised figure of 1,844,000 and the market expectation of 1,870,000 by 41,000 and 15,000, respectively.
The number of initial jobless claims is an indicator that can gauge the overheating situation of the U.S. labor market. An increase in jobless claims can be interpreted as a sign that the overheated labor market is cooling down.
Experts are closely monitoring employment indicators such as jobless claims to understand the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's federal government restructuring and tariff increases on corporate decision-making.
