Scott Besant, the US Treasury Secretary, stated on the 11th (local time) regarding the first official trade talks with China, "There has been substantial progress."
Besant, after the two-day talks in Geneva, Switzerland, which concluded on this day, told reporters, "We will disclose additional details on Monday (the 12th)," according to reports from Reuters and AFP. Besant led the negotiations with the Chinese delegation in Geneva as the chief representative from the US side.
From China, Vice Premier He Lifeng, known as the 'economic powerhouse,' participated as the chief representative. Besant emphasized that the talks were "productive."
Jamison Greer, the USTR representative who participated in the negotiations with Besant, described the two-day talks as "very constructive." Greer also explained that the differences with China were "not as significant as previously thought."
China's chief representative, Vice Premier He, also stated, "We have reached significant consensus," adding, "Both sides agreed to establish a trade and economic consultation mechanism, and follow-up discussions will continue." He said, "China has always pursued 'win-win' results in trade negotiations," and "China is ready to cooperate with the US to manage differences and expand areas of cooperation."
