Chang-Yong Lee, Governor of the Bank of Korea, plans to hold discussions on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) with the heads of the six major domestic banks (KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, NH Nonghyup, IBK Industrial Bank).
According to industry sources on the 21st (local time), Governor Chang-Yong Lee will meet with the Institute of International Finance (IIF) on the 26th (KST) to discuss the potential use and operational methods of CBDC, focusing on the Agorá project. It is reported that the heads of the six major domestic banks will also attend the meeting to express their positions.
Furthermore, discussions are expected to cover domestic trends related to stablecoins and the 'Han River' project, a CBDC real transaction use project led by the Bank of Korea.
Meanwhile, the Agorá project is the largest public-private project utilizing tokenized bank deposits and institutional CBDC. It aims to improve cross-border payment systems based on an integrated ledger, similar to the initial model of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT).
