Leaders from major countries who gathered in Canada for the Group of Seven (G7) summit reportedly asked U.S. President Donald Trump to end the trade war.
According to News1 and others, a senior German official told journalists on the 16th (local time), "Several participants requested (President Trump) in the official session to end the tariff war as soon as possible." These leaders are also said to have explained that President Trump’s tariff policies not only seriously damage the global economy but also serve only to strengthen China.
It is also reported that heads of state from each country delivered their concerns regarding tariffs to President Trump through bilateral meetings.
A source said that Emmanuel Macron, President of France, urged Trump to quickly bring an end to the trade conflict.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, also spoke directly with President Trump regarding trade issues.
Meanwhile, on this day, Trump met with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and signed the final trade agreement. The United States agreed to impose only a 10% base reciprocal tariff on British imports, while setting quotas and lowering tariff rates for specific categories such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
In contrast, Japan was unable to conclude tariff negotiations with the United States. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated, "Some points remain where both sides do not see eye to eye, and it was agreed to instruct the responsible ministers to continue further consultations."
