U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant dismissed the possibility of economic decoupling between the U.S. and China, stating that the current tariff relaxation measures are being handled in a controlled and strategically judged manner.
According to the overseas economic news channel Walter Bloomberg on the 27th (local time), Secretary Besant stated in an interview with Fox Business Network (FBN), "We do not wish for decoupling with China," and "This round of tariff relaxation can be managed within a fully controllable scope."
He added, "We will be watching to see if China acts as a responsible partner." Regarding the additional tariffs scheduled for August 12, he said, "It depends on China's response."
Currently, the U.S. is imposing a 30% tariff on China. China, on the other hand, is levying approximately a 10% tariff on U.S. products. Secretary Besant explained that a high 20% tariff continues to be imposed on imports of fentanyl from China.
Regarding supply chain issues, there was also mention of magnets. Secretary Besant remarked, "Through this agreement, companies sourcing magnets will be able to receive stable supply as before," and added, "I'm confident that magnets will flow normally." He evaluated this as "not merely a relaxation, but part of a structural agreement."
Meanwhile, right after these remarks were delivered, U.S. stock market major index futures increased their gains.
