According to Walter Bloomberg, an overseas financial news channel, on the 12th (local time), President von der Leyen stated, "The EU is ready to adopt proportional response measures if necessary to protect our industries and jobs." This is interpreted as the official stance in response to President Trump's announcement of high tariffs affecting 24 countries, including the EU.
Additionally, the media outlet reported that three senior EU officials assessed, "Trump's recent measure is a pressure tactic for negotiations."
Previously, President Trump sent out sequential high-tariff letters from the 7th to the 12th to 24 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and the EU. The EU was included in the fourth batch of letters sent on the 12th, and a 30% tariff is scheduled to be imposed starting August 1.
