U.S. Initial Jobless Claims at 221,000—Below Market Expectations
Summary
- The number of initial jobless claims in the United States was 221,000, falling below market expectations.
- This figure was below both expert forecasts and the previous week, and is regarded as an important indicator for assessing the degree of labor market overheating.
- Experts are monitoring employment indicators and observing the impact of government restructuring and increased tariffs on businesses.

Last week, the number of initial jobless claims in the United States was significantly lower than market expectations.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 17th (local time) that initial jobless claims for last week totaled 221,000. This is 12,000 fewer than the expert forecast of 233,000. Compared to the revised figure from the previous week (228,000), the number is 7,000 lower.
The number of continuing claims for unemployment benefits, those claiming for two consecutive weeks, was counted at 1,956,000. This is 2,000 higher than the previous week's revised figure (1,954,000), but 14,000 fewer than the market forecast of 1,970,000.
Initial jobless claims are an indicator that can gauge whether the U.S. labor market is overheating. When unemployment benefits claims increase, it can be interpreted as a sign that an overheated labor market is cooling down.
Experts are closely monitoring employment indicators such as jobless claims to gauge the impact of factors like federal government restructuring under U.S. President Donald Trump and tariff increases on corporate decision-making.
