U.S. imposes additional 25% tariff on India… Total tariff rate now 50%
Summary
- The United States has imposed an additional 25% tariff on India, bringing the total tariff rate to 50%.
- The new tariff measure was introduced as a response to India's importation of Russian oil.
- The U.S. tariff hike is reportedly intended to pressure India in trade negotiations as well as to put pressure on Russia.

The United States is imposing an additional 25% tariff on India due to its import of Russian oil.
According to CNBC and other foreign media on the 6th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order today imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian products. This measure responds to India's direct and indirect imports of Russian oil.
With this, the total tariff rate the U.S. imposes on India has reached 50%. Originally, the U.S. was set to impose a 25% reciprocal tariff on India starting the 7th.
The increase in U.S. tariffs on India is seen as both a pressure tactic in ongoing trade negotiations with India and as a move to put pressure on Russia. President Trump previously warned that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine by the 8th, tariff sanctions will be imposed not only on Russia but also on its trading partners.
