Artcube 2R2, located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, announced on the 11th that it will hold a special exhibition spotlighting five female artists who have built their own unique artistic worlds in the current of modern Korean art, starting from the 22nd.
This exhibition is organized to celebrate the first anniversary of the gallery's relocation, and has been thoughtfully prepared over a long period of time from theme selection and work recruitment to spatial composition. In particular, it brings together signature and rare works by each artist, organically arranging a diverse range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, and media art across all floors, allowing visitors to appreciate the works from a multidimensional perspective.
The exhibition features masters of Korean women's art history, including Chun Kyung-ja, Park Re-hyun, Yun Suk-nam, Bang Hye-ja, and Ryu Min-ja. Their works transcend the simple category of 'women,' showcasing unique aesthetic achievements that overcome the limitations of their times. Spanning a wide variety of genres, the exhibition reinterprets the weight of life and creative struggles these artists have endured as individuals and creators from a contemporary viewpoint, and is expected to deliver a profound resonance and personal connection to visitors through the intense thought and experimental spirit permeating every corner of the gallery.
Hong Ji-sook, the representative of Artcube 2R2, remarked, "This exhibition is an especially meaningful occasion, celebrating the gallery’s first anniversary. In order to reflect on the past year and explore the way forward, more care than ever has been taken in planning, exhibition composition, and even the finest details," adding, "This exhibition is not simply a retrospective of the achievements of women artists. Through the brilliant traces they have left, we hope this occasion inspires reflection on how their artistic legacy can be inherited and expanded to the next generation."
The exhibition will take place on all floors of Artcube 2R2, including the first floor, the underground Media Cube, and the sixth-floor Lounge Flux, with each section presenting signature works, media art, and related books by individual artists for a multidimensional experience.
In addition, the exhibition coincides with Frieze Seoul and KIAF week, with Artcube 2R2 also participating in the 'Cheongdam Night' program held during Frieze Week. Timed for the arrival of art professionals and collectors from around the world in Seoul, the exhibition aims to introduce both the historical depth and contemporary vitality of Korean women's art, providing an opportunity to further intensify global interest in Korean women artists.
