Summary

  • Hamas announced that it would accept the Gaza Strip ceasefire proposal from the mediators without amendments.
  • The ceasefire plan includes a 60-day cessation of hostilities, hostage repatriation, and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
  • The agreement aims to end the war and prevent further deterioration of conditions for Gaza Strip residents.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has accepted the new ceasefire proposal suggested by Egypt and Qatar, mediators in the Gaza Strip ceasefire negotiations.

According to international news outlets such as the Financial Times (FT) on the 18th (local time), Hamas stated its intention to agree to the mediators' new ceasefire plan without requesting any amendments. The proposal includes a 60-day cessation of hostilities, the repatriation of 10 surviving hostages held in the Gaza Strip, and the release of Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel.

A source cited by the FT said, "This proposal paves the way for a comprehensive agreement to end the war," adding, "It is the best way to prevent additional military operations (including the occupation of Gaza City), which would endanger the hostages and further worsen the situation for Gaza residents."

This development is similar to the agreement proposed last May by Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Middle East envoy. Initially, Israel had agreed to this proposal, but negotiations broke down when Hamas rejected it.
