U.S. New Jobless Claims Hit 235,000, Far Exceeding Expectations
Summary
- The number of new jobless claims in the United States reached 235,000, significantly surpassing the expert forecast of 226,000.
- Continued jobless claims were also reported at 1,972,000, exceeding both last week's and the market expectations.
- Experts are keeping a close eye on employment indicators, as they serve as important investment signals for assessing the condition of the U.S. labor market.

Last week, the number of new jobless claims in the United States greatly exceeded market expectations.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 21st (local time) that the number of new jobless claims last week was 235,000. This figure is 9,000 more than the expert forecast (226,000). Compared to the revised number for the previous week (224,000), it is up by 11,000.
The number of continued jobless claims, referring to those filing claims for two consecutive weeks, was counted at 1,972,000. This is an increase of 30,000 from the previous week's revised figure (1,942,000) and 12,000 more than the market expectation (1,960,000).
The number of new jobless claims is an indicator used to gauge the overheating of the U.S. labor market. When jobless claims increase, it can be interpreted as a sign that the overheated labor market is cooling down.
Experts are closely monitoring employment indicators such as jobless claims to assess the impact of policies like President Donald Trump's aggressive tariffs on corporate decision-making.
