Summary

  • President Xi Jinping is expected to miss the ASEAN Summit in October.
  • It has been reported that Premier Li Qiang will attend the meeting on behalf of China instead of President Xi.
  • With the U.S.–China trade war truce ongoing and a major summit postponed, attention turns to developments in related negotiations.

President Xi Jinping of China is expected to miss the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit scheduled to take place in Malaysia this October.

According to Reuters on the 22nd, multiple sources familiar with the matter stated that President Xi is unlikely to attend the ASEAN Summit this October. There had been considerable speculation that President Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump might have their first face-to-face meeting since the start of the Trump administration’s second term at the upcoming summit, following a pause in the trade war between the United States and China.

Instead of President Xi, Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to represent China at the meeting in October. The Chinese foreign ministry has yet to provide an immediate response to Reuters' request for confirmation.

President Trump had previously stated that he is likely to meet President Xi before the end of the year. Meanwhile, the United States and China have recently agreed to an additional 90-day tariff truce, temporarily avoiding further high-tariff measures on each other’s products. Negotiations are ongoing over various issues, including trade imbalances, market access, and rare earth elements.
