The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said the prime minister was killed in an Israeli airstrike and vowed retaliation.

On the 30th (local time), according to Reuters and others, the Houthis announced that Prime Minister Ahmed Ghalib Alawi and several ministers died on the 28th in an Israeli attack during a meeting in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital. Alawi, who was appointed a year ago, was not considered part of the Houthi core leadership and was a nominal prime minister without real authority. The Houthi Supreme Political Council immediately appointed First Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ahmed Maftah as acting prime minister. Deputy Prime Minister Maftah is one of the key power figures who effectively leads the government.

The Houthis said they would retaliate against Israel. Mahdi al-Mashat, chairman of the Supreme Political Council, warned in a Telegram video, "(Foreign companies based in Israel) should leave Israel before it's too late."

The Iran-backed Houthis have attacked Israel, citing support for the Palestinians after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Israel has also continued airstrikes in response to Houthi attacks.
