U.S. President Donald Trump on the 14th (local time) warned of sanctions against Russia.

According to Reuters, President Trump told reporters that the sanctions Europe has imposed on Russia "are not strong enough" and that he "would gladly impose sanctions." He added, "To correspond with what I'm doing (sanctions), Europe would also have to strengthen its sanctions."

President Trump also emphasized, "European countries are buying Russian crude oil," and said, "I would prefer that Europe not buy crude oil." His remarks that day have been seen as proposing an alternative after mediation of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia effectively collapsed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has not agreed to the summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed by President Trump and is intensifying the offensive against Ukraine. Inside and outside the U.S. government, there have been many calls to increase pressure to get Russia to participate in talks for a ceasefire.
