Summary

  • Ethereum (ETH)'s next mainnet upgrade 'Fusaka' is reported to be scheduled for application on December 3.
  • The Fusaka upgrade focuses on strengthening scalability and security, and includes peer data availability sampling, raising the block gas limit, and the introduction of Verkle trees.
  • A 4-week audit contest with a $2 million reward for security enhancement is also being held.

Ethereum's (ETH) next mainnet upgrade, 'Fusaka', is reported to be targeted for mainnet deployment on December 3.

According to The Block on the 18th (local time), Ethereum core developers confirmed this schedule in a meeting. Also, Fusaka will be activated sequentially on testnets—Holesky on October 1, Sepolia on October 14, and Hoodi on October 28—ahead of mainnet deployment. Specific block height and epoch figures will be finalized within a few days.

The Fusaka upgrade focuses on strengthening both scalability and security. Notably, it will introduce Peer Data Availability Sampling (Peer DAS) to help validators verify large data (blobs) without downloading the entire dataset. This is expected to increase Ethereum's processing efficiency and roughly double data capacity.

It also includes raising the block gas limit from the current 30 million to 150 million, introducing Verkle trees to optimize data storage, and improving Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) performance to speed up smart contract execution. A 4-week security audit contest with a reward of up to $2 million is also underway to bolster security. After Fusaka, Ethereum is planning the 'Glamsterdam' update. At Glamsterdam,
