Summary

  • It reported that President Trump and leaders of both parties failed to reach an agreement over the U.S. federal government's shutdown crisis.
  • It said that budget processing made no progress due to differences over the contentious Obamacare subsidy payment extension.
  • It reported that if Congress fails to pass the continuing resolution (CR) by the 30th, the federal government is expected to enter a shutdown.

A meeting on the 29th (local time) between President Donald Trump and leaders of both parties aimed at avoiding a U.S. federal government 'shutdown' (temporary work stoppage) ended without reaching an agreement.

With one day remaining before the night of the 30th, when the federal government's 2025 fiscal year ends, President Trump met at the White House with Republican Senate leader John Thune and Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer to seek common ground.

However, it was reported that President Trump and Republican leaders and Democratic leaders left having only confirmed differences over extending subsidy payments for the public health insurance 'Obamacare' (ACA·Affordable Care Act), which had been a point of contention in handling the federal budget.

Before the meeting, Thune said he would re-vote on the seven-week short-term spending bill (continuing resolution·CR) on the 30th — which had passed the House on the 19th but was defeated in the Senate due to Democratic opposition — but stated that he would not include an extension of Obamacare subsidy payments.

If Congress fails to pass the CR by the 30th, the federal government will go into a shutdown from October 1, the following day.
