On the 20th (local time), according to The Block, Cuomo said, "The next mayor should lead the technologies that will define the 21st century, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and biotech," and that "the city will create a new administrative post to support innovation industries and promote public-private cooperation."
He explained that the Chief Innovation Officer would be responsible for attracting investment and jobs in advanced industries and for streamlining public services through technology. The position would be appointed following advice from the Innovation Council, which will be composed of leading figures in the AI, blockchain, and biotech fields.
The Cuomo campaign emphasized it would "make New York the global capital of digital finance and decentralized innovation" and "reform outdated regulations into a modern framework that balances consumer protection and the promotion of innovation."
Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has also supported the blockchain industry and last week signed an executive order establishing the city's first Office of Digital Assets. Mayor Adams' term ends on January 1, 2026, and the next mayor will be elected on November 4 (local time).
