Choi Seon-gil's solo exhibition 'The Song of a Thousand Years: Autumn's Narrative' will be held at the ArtCube 2R2 Gallery in Gangnam-gu, Seoul from the 6th of next month to December 17. This exhibition, themed 'Autumn's Narrative', captures in painting the mood of the season where maturity and lingering resonance intersect at the year's end.
The exhibition is centered on the ginkgo tree in Bangye-ri that has stood in place for more than 800 years. For over a year, Choi visited the site in person, meticulously recording the seasonal changes, directions of light, and movements of the wind. He captured the temporality and vitality contained in the tree through the changing textures of nature each season and moment with a delicate gaze and brushwork. The artist's canvases are filled, beyond mere reproduction, with a deep communion with life and existence.
Moreover, the yellowed ginkgo leaves are portrayed as both the fruit of a tree that endured the year and a symbol reflecting the depth of life. The artist presents a space for contemplation where one can encounter nature even within the city, allowing visitors to step out of the pace of everyday life and feel the flow of the seasons.
Choi said, "While painting the tree, at some moment I realized the tree was painting me." He explained that through a single tree he metaphorically unfolded a person, through a forest a crowd, and through a mountain life.
Hong Ji-sook, representative of ArtCube 2R2, said, "This exhibition, held in a gallery amid streets where ginkgo leaves have turned yellow, will offer a time to pause briefly from busy daily life to contemplate the works with autumn and feel the change of the seasons," adding, "The works born from the meeting of the ginkgo tree that carries a thousand years of life and the artist's brush will prompt viewers to newly reflect on the depth of time and existence."
Meanwhile, in connection with the exhibition, Namhae's Spring Day Publishing will publish Choi Seon-gil's new book 'One Day, I Met a Tree', which contains the artist's work and reflections. The publication celebration will be held at ArtCube 2R2 on the 29th of next month, and time will also be arranged for visitors to directly interact with the artist and share the lingering impressions of the works.
