U.S. President Donald Trump visited Japan on the 27th for the first time since regaining the presidency. It is his first visit to Japan in six years since June 2019.

After arriving at Haneda Airport that day, President Trump met Emperor Naruhito at the Kōkyo (Imperial Palace). It is his second meeting with the Emperor, following his state visit to Japan in 2019. On the 28th, he will hold his first summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. After his first phone call with Prime Minister Takaichi on the 25th, President Trump told reporters, "She is wonderful. She was a very close ally of Abe (former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe)." The two countries are expected to speak with one voice on 'strengthening the alliance'.

Regarding tariffs, progress on Japan's $550 billion investment in the United States is expected to be discussed. A memorandum of understanding to cooperate in strengthening shipbuilding capacity will also be signed. It is reported that measures to promote U.S. shipbuilding investment will also be included. On defense spending, Prime Minister Takaichi pledged to "achieve 2% of GDP within the year," but the U.S. is reported to have unofficially demanded 3.5% of GDP earlier.
