U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear that he will not back down an inch on Greenland, defining it as a strategic outpost essential to the security of the United States and the international community.

On the 20th (local time), Trump said on his Truth Social that he had discussed the Greenland issue with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, adding that they had a “very good phone call” and that they agreed to meet with the relevant parties in Davos, Switzerland.

In particular, Trump stressed that “Greenland is essential not only for U.S. national security but also for global security,” adding, “There can be no going back.” He also said that “everyone agrees” with that view, framing the Greenland issue not as a matter for negotiation but as a precondition for security.

Trump also reiterated U.S. military strength. He said the United States is the most powerful country in the world, citing the military rebuilding effort he pursued during his first term. “The military rebuild is continuing at an even accelerated pace. The United States is the only country that can guarantee world peace through strength,” he said.

In markets and diplomatic circles, the remarks are being seen as the Trump administration elevating the geopolitical issue surrounding Greenland from a simple diplomatic and trade matter to one directly tied to a U.S.-led global security order. Attention is also focused on the possibility that a Davos meeting could further heighten tensions between the United States and Europe over Greenland.
