The U.S. Supreme Court has begun oral arguments over the legality of President Donald Trump's large-scale retaliatory tariffs.
On the 6th (local time), according to O'Daily, the Court has initiated hearings on the legality of Trump's large-scale retaliatory tariffs, and the central issue is whether the high tariffs unilaterally imposed by the Trump administration without congressional approval violated the Constitution's "taxing power of Congress."
During the hearing, it was reported that not only liberal justices but also some conservative justices raised questions about the legitimacy of Trump's tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts pointed out, "Trump's tariffs are effectively a tax imposed on the American people, and the power to tax has always been the exclusive prerogative of Congress."
Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, appointed by Trump, also posed sharp questions and closely examined the plaintiffs' arguments opposing the tariffs. Currently, the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative bloc holds a 6-3 majority.
The Court is expected to issue a decision in December. Meanwhile, according to decentralized prediction platform Polymarket, Trump's probability of winning dropped from 40% before the oral arguments to 27%, and temporarily plunged to 18% during the hearing.
